Dashboard Walkthrough

As part of our design exploration we have identified an opportunity for some of the more functional elements of the current users' page to be pulled up into a persistent 'dashboard' of tools.

This short video explains some of our thinking and demonstrates how that may work. Apologies in advance for the sound quality.

So far, I like the looks with the gray bar on top and the 6 boxes with utilities/ services.
More and more I see that many (most?) CERN pages contain too many letters.

The question is which boxes will be defined and how flexible can they be defined?

Keep up the good work!

Cheers, Paul.

Hi Paul,

We want to make it easy for people to pull in the information / links / application functions that they need. There will be two ways of integrating things into the dashboard:

  1. configuration of standard widgets; and
  2. development of custom widgets.

Initially we will concentrate on producing a standard toolkit of basic configuration widgets. Things like:

  • Pull in this RSS feed
  • Show me the latest 5 events from this Indico category
  • Display the following links

There's a lot we could do with just this basic functionality. But going beyond this it would be great to have more functionality in place – right there in the dashboard. Being able to book a room or raise a service ticket are two examples that came up in a thread to an earlier blog post. This tight integration with other CERN applications will take much longer to deliver, and I'm sure that the owners of some applications may prefer to handle everything within their own applications, but I think that we need to see a few examples in action in order to build the foundation for a dashboard user experience. Next year we will work on a dashboard API for developers – it won't be until this begins that we can really start to define how integrated certain CERN applications may become.

...Jarek. Alex uploaded again for you – is that working for you now?
